Twitter™

Next Generation Learning and many popular and educational websites feature links to ‘twitter’, but what is it?

Twitter is a free networking service that lets you:

• follow what others are doing and saying right now
• catch up on the latest news
• click on links to blogs and other websites
• keep in touch with friends and contacts through short online messages.

Twitter messages are known as ‘tweets’ and are:

• short messages of 140 characters
• displayed on the author's online profile page.

People can post and view tweets on the Twitter website or send and receive them using a mobile phone. Free software such as Tweetdeck, Seesmic or Twhirl is also available to help people manage their Twitter accounts.

You can see someone’s Twitter updates if you follow a link from their website. But if you want to follow someone regularly, it’s easier to sign up for a free Twitter account.

With an account, you can choose to:

• follow tweets from one or many authors
• connect with other followers in a group
• search for and find contacts already on Twitter
• add your own tweets
• keep your profile open or restrict it to people you know.
